Knowing someone you have never met

Visual bachelor thesis project
(2020)
"Knowing Someone You Have Never Met" is a deeply personal project by Joris Voeten that delves into family history and identity through photography. The project is rooted in Voeten’s desire to connect with his grandfather, who passed away before he was born. Using stories shared by his family, particularly a touching letter from his aunt, Voeten sets out to recreate these memories visually, turning abstract family history into tangible, evocative images.

By doing so, he not only learns about his grandfather's life and character but also gains insights into himself and the ways familial traits and values are passed down through generations. The project intertwines memory, photography, and storytelling to create a visual journey that bridges the gap between past and present, helping Voeten feel closer to the man he never had the chance to meet.

Ultimately, the work explores the profound influence of family, even across time and distance, and how creative expression can help us understand and honor that connection.
